Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT)
An exciting new contact lens treatment alternative to LASIK, Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT) is ParagonŽ's version of Orthokeratology. Historically, orthokeratology has been a technique used to reshape patients' corneas while they sleep, reducing myopia or nearsightedness so that glasses or contact lenses are not necessary during daytime hours. ParagonŽ's CRT is the first FDA-approved system for overnight reshaping and offers a wonderful alternative for those who do not want surgery or are not good candidates for surgery. In addition, CRT is reversible and can be discontinued at any time. Using a highly oxygen permeable rigid contact lens material, CRT lenses gently reshape the pliable front surface of the eye, or cornea, while you sleep! The result is a highly predictable and adjustable correction that allows patients to see clearly both while they are wearing the lenses at night, and more importantly while not wearing them during the day. A good analogy is that of a dental patient who uses a retainer at night to maintain the straightness of his teeth so that no therapeutic device is required during the daytime. Patients electing CRT are typically seen multiple times during the initiation of treatment. An initial evaluation to determine candidacy and concurrent diagnostic fitting examination is the first step. Patients are typically then seen the next morning, again after one week of therapy, at one month of therapy, and thereafter as needed. Successfully treated patients are then seen for annual routine examination to monitor ocular health and make any necessary changes. All of the doctors at Eye Associates of Winter Park are certified to perform CRT. Please contact us if you have any questions.
